Newfoundlanders are gearing up for the Tom Hollett Memorial Targa Bambina

ST. JOHN’S (January 17, 2017) – The Tom Hollett Memorial Targa Bambina is projected to be one of the best courses that Targa Newfoundland has ever run.  With 16 stages, including four prologues (practice stages) the event is expected to have the most efficient stage to transit ratio of any Targa-related event worldwide.  With mostly newly-paved roads, beautiful scenery, and home to an incredible number of exotic and one-off special cars, the Burin Peninsula is bound to host a memorable rally experience this Canada Day long weekend.

As the Targa Newfoundland competition continues to grow and bring in professional drivers and crews from all over the world each September, the board of directors decided to introduce the Bambina competition to give a more compacted version of the main event to stimulate interest for local drivers.  With the Bambina’s small price bracket and the opportunity to gain entry way into the main event, Newfoundlanders are beginning to step up and show their ability to tackle roads in their own backyard.

Some of the local competitors taking part in the inaugural Bambina include:  Bay Roberts own Adam Mercer and co-driver Shawn English from Paradise; the father and son team of Lee and Rex Hayward of Conception Bay South; long-time Targa volunteer turned driver Gordon Maxwell of St. John’s and Wayne Lorenzen from Gander; rally rookies Geoff Dawe and Phil Keough of St. John’s; senior volunteer member of Targa Derek Churchill with his daughter Jennifer Corcoran of Conception Bay South; and Targa Newfoundland 2015 Classic division champs Mike Mercer and Corey Prosser of St. John’s.

President Robert Giannou and General Manager Darren Sheppard of Targa Newfoundland will be traveling to the Burin Peninsula this week to conduct information sessions with communities, interested groups, and individuals regarding the Bambina.  The main session is being held at Hotel Marystown on Thursday, January 19th at 7pm and is open to the public.  Registration packages will be available for those in attendance.

Managed and operated by Newfoundland international Motorsports Limited, Targa Newfoundland is one of three internationally recognized Targa Motorsport events in the world. The Tom Hollett Memorial Targa Bambina competition is scheduled for June 30 – July 3, 2017. The event will utilize the roads on the Burin Peninsula and be based out of the community of Burin.

Subaru Canada Announces Targa Newfoundland Support Program

ST. JOHN’S (December 20, 2016) – Subaru Canada, a long-time participant and supporter of the Targa Newfoundland international rally ever since its inception in 2002, recently announced the return of a broad ranging incentive and support program for Subaru competitors, their immediate families, and for Targa event staff.

The Subaru Canada program, implemented in recognition of the fact that Subaru products have competed in every Targa Newfoundland and won the last four Targa’s, sets out various incentives and awards for Subaru participants.  Participants and/or any immediate family member (mother, father, spouse, son or daughter) who purchase or lease a new Subaru from January 1 – December 31, 2017 will be eligible for a C$750.00 rebate.  This rebate is also being made available to the Targa event staff.

Participants who use any model of Subaru for entry into any of the four main categories within Targa Newfoundland (Open, Modern, Classic, and Grand Touring) will receive a C$500.00 Entrant Award which goes towards their entry fee.  Performance awards are also included in the program, apply towards Subaru entrants in any of the four competition categories.  A Subaru that achieves first place in any of the categories will receive a cash award of C$2,000.00, second place C$1,500.00 and third place C$1,000.00.

Brian Hyland, Director, After Sales – Parts Operations, states that “Subaru Canada has been a long time supporter of Targa Newfoundland and is very excited to be able to make this offer available once again to those Subaru participants in the 16th annual Targa Newfoundland.  Subaru has won the past four Targa’s and swept the podium in Open last year, the highest division possible in Targa, and are hoping for the same type of results in 2017.  We wish all participants good luck and safe driving in the coming event.”

Owned and operated by Newfoundland International Motorsports Limited, Targa Newfoundland is one of three internationally recognized Targa motorsports events in the world.  The 2017 competition will start in St. John’s on September 10th and concludes back in the capital on September 15th.  The annual rally will cover more than 1,600 kilometers of the challenging, twisty roads of the central and eastern portion of Newfoundland, including over 440 kilometers of closed-road, flat-out Targa stages.

Projected 2017 Targa Course Released

Targa Newfoundland is pleased to announce that we have received approval from the Town of Harbour Grace to run the Targa Stages shown in the attached schedule within its jurisdiction.  This decision was the final stepping stone in putting together the 2017 ‘Sweet Sixteen’ Targa course.

We have incorporated a number of changes in the 2017 course which has changed some of the locations of overnight stays.  As usual, on the Saturday and Sunday before the event, we will be in St. John’s;  Monday and Tuesday evenings will see us in Clarenville, and new for 2017, Wednesday and Thursday in the Conception Bay North (CBN) area.

The two nights in CBN represent a change in the type and style of accommodations competitors are accustom with.  Competitors and their crews will now be able to experience smaller facilities and Bed & Breakfast locations.  The location of the nightly car shows in CBN will be confirmed soon.

The reasons for these changes are primarily sourced from feedback gathered from the 2016 event.   As a result we:

  • Decided to move out of the upper Bonavista peninsula.  While the stages are lovely, the roads are much to rough.  With the province’s current economic conditions, we could not foresee the required repairs and upgrades being made to the roads in these sparsely populated areas.
  • Created the Targa Open-Pro Class, which will see increased speeds which, in turn, adversely affect the vehicles on rough stages.
  • Move to a more heavily populated, sponsor friendly area.   Conception Bay North fills this requirement, is only a one hour drive from St. John’s, and has much better roads.
  • Hotel accommodations are becoming more and more difficult to book in the Clarenville area, as major bus tours were cutting into the room availability.

In addition, over the past three years, we have experienced an increase in the Targa related festivities in the Cupids / Brigus stages.  This is attracting more and more spectators each year, which in turn attracts more spectator services and entertainment.  We want to expand this concept:

  • On Thursday of the 2017 event we will, as can be seen in the schedule below, run 12 closely knit stages that are quite different in character.
  • We have partnered with the new multi-million dollar Stone Jug Restaurant and Entertainment Centre in Carbonear to provide a centerpiece to the event. The goal of this partnership is to create a full day of competition and entertainment which will turn into a Carbonear/Harbour Grace based Targa festival and draw many spectators to the area.
  • This festive and exciting Thursday will have something for everyone which will, in turn, augment and increase the suspense and excitement in the Cupids/Brigus areas on the next day.
  • We feel that this mass entertainment concept will attract many spectators to the area. They will, in turn, patronize the restaurants, businesses and accommodation facilities.

So now, just before Christmas, have our course ready.  There will be changes, bumps, and hollows as we move into the New Year, but we have our core plan locked down.

Best Regards for Christmas and a Very happy Targa New Year

Robert Giannou

Tom Hollett Memorial Targa Bambina officially on the start line

ST. JOHN’S (November 14, 2016) – Newfoundland International Motorsports Limited is pleased to announce that plans to hold a Targa Bambina competition during the Canada Day long weekend in 2017. This mini version of the internationally acclaimed competition, will be held from June 30th – July 3rd and will consist of three days of competition, offering 16 competitive stages on the Burin Peninsula.

At the conclusion of the 15th annual Targa in September, it was obvious that there was strong demand for increased competitive motorsport activity within the province.  With over one hundred competitors involved in the recent Targa, it became clear that another secondary event could be supported, this one by mostly local competitors.

This smaller version of the Targa is designed as a compact, three day adventure, instead of the grueling week-long event that is held each September.  Two categories will be featured in the Bambina event for competitors to choose from – Grand Touring, the competitive division, and Fast Touring, the non-competitive division.

The Bambina gives the opportunity for people with an interest in motorsports to try their hand at stage rallying, without having to commit to the time and effort that the full Targa would involve.  Entry for this event is a fraction of the cost of the Targa, and the overall winner will gain free admission to Targa’s 16th annual event in September.

Tom Hollett was an immense supporter of the tarmac rally and embodies what Targa Newfoundland is all about.  He was larger than life and created what he dreamed of.  Targa will assist the Oldest Colony Trust, a registered charity that Tom created, that creates and maintains public amenities such as historical buildings, recreational areas, and trail systems in the Burin area.  Funds generated by the Bambina, through nightly car shows, the use of community accommodations , and other initiatives, will go directly to the Trust, to support this worthy cause.

Managed and operated by Newfoundland International Motorsports Limited, Targa Newfoundland is one of three internationally recognized Targa motorsport events in the world.  The Tom Hollett Memorial Bambina competition is scheduled for June 30 – July 3, 2017.  The event will utilize the roads on the Burin Peninsula and be based out of the community of Burin.

Sooooo, here’s the link to the video for it!

Make sure you copy/paste the link above into your browser, that way the correct show will load, or just click on it! Targa’s segment is the first 10 minutes so you won’t have to wait long to see our part!

Only catch. Only Canadian television subscribers can view it. You have to log into Discovery via your satellite or cable television email/password that you’d normally use to get access to your account. Once you do that, you’ll be able to view the show.
