New dates and entry fees announced for the 2017 Targa Newfoundland

ST. JOHN’S (September 20, 2016) – After a successful completion of the 15th annual Targa Newfoundland tarmac rally last week, Targa is already preparing for the 2017 competition. The new dates for the 2017 Targa are from September 14th to 22nd to distance the event from the Labour Day holiday. Entry fees for all four divisions will remain the same as 2016.

The course setters are completing the plan for the 2017 course with the continuing goal of reducing the number of rough roads that the event uses.   The rules committee will only make small adjustments to the rules between now and 2017 in a continuing effort to have rule stability.

Targa will also be replacing its aging timing gear for 2017, with a new yet to be chosen system.  A select group has also been set up to examine the feasibility of moving to zero base timing in the Open class of the Targa division for 2017.

As stated, Targa will begin a week later than normal in 2017, with the event running from Thursday, September 14th through Friday, September 22nd.  The 14th and 15th will be reserved for its very successful driving school, which teaches rookie competitors the unique challenges Newfoundland roads have to offer them.  This year the driving school will be made mandatory for all that have not competed in Targa Newfoundland.   The 16th will be the Registration/Tech Day where competitors officially register on site for the event and have their vehicles checked by Targa’s Tech team.  The Prologue, or practice stages, will be held on the 17th in and around St. John’s.  The Targa Newfoundland competition will officially begin on the 18th as the event head’s out towards the Burin and Bonavista peninsulas.  It will conclude back in St. John’s on the 22nd.

Entry fees will not change from the 2016 prices, nor will the early bird and other registration dates to obtain discounted prices change.  Early bird pricing is in effect until November 30th, so potential competitors who are fully prepared to enter should consider doing so in the near future to obtain the best price.  Targa also accommodates monthly payments for entry fees, which provides competitors financial stability as they prepare for the event over the coming months.  Further information on entry fees and pricing dates can be seen by visiting the Targa website and accessing the FAQ section.  Entry forms are accessible via the main website or by contacting the Targa office.

“We were able to pull in over 60 competitors in the 2016 competition, so we are setting a goal to have over 70 competitors in 2017,” expressed Targa Newfoundland President Robert Giannou when asked about his thoughts on the new dates and prices.  “We decided to move the competition back an additional week to accommodate schools in the areas we run, so that they can get settled and we can get information to them without a huge rush occurring, as they are usually just getting back into routines when Targa arrives.  Plus, it allows competitors to enjoy their summer, the volunteers to do the same, then all come together mid-September and totally focus on the event.”

Information regarding the number of overnights in a specific location, car show locations, and new stages will be released over the coming months as those details are confirmed.

Owned and operated by Newfoundland International Motorsports Limited, Targa Newfoundland is one of three internationally recognized Targa motorsports events in the world.  The 2017 competition will start in St. John’s on September 18th and conclude back in the capital on September 22nd.  The rally will cover more than 1,600 kilometers of challenging roads in the central and eastern portions of Newfoundland.  It includes over 440 kilometers of closed-road, flat-out Targa stages.
