ST. JOHN’S (April 1, 2016) – Targa Newfoundland is proud to announce the addition of an all new competitive division to commemorate the 15th annual event.
Targa Newfoundland President Robert Giannou announced the addition of the new “Marine Division” which will see dories, traditional Newfoundland flat-bottomed boats, face off against each other.
“Given our tremendous success with land based stages, taking to the water was the obvious next step,” said Giannou. “We feel this is the ideal way to honour our 15th year, as well as Newfoundland and Labrador’s proud seafaring history.”
The concept of a Marine Division was born from the iconic photo taken during the 10th anniversary Targa of the bright yellow Ferrari Enzo floating in Mortier Bay in Marystown with a matching yellow dory floating nearby. In cooperation with the Scandinavian Dory Series (SDS), the concept quickly became reality.
“We are excited to expand to North America,” SDS President Sloof Lirpa said from his office in Oslo, “and we look forward to making the partnership with Targa Newfoundland a long and fruitful one.”
