Targa Newfoundland Sponsors Youth Group for the Royal St. John’s Regatta

For Immediate Release

ST.JOHN’S (July 31, 2018) – Joe Dowden, the Clerk of the Course for Targa Newfoundland spent a lot of time as a youth down at Quidi Vidi, St. John’s, NL either following his Grandfather Max around or rowing with other kids from Outer Cove, NL, Joe Dowden knows firsthand the struggles of getting a team together.
Getting everyone to the pond for practice was always a challenge but nowhere near as hard as finding a sponsor, this kept Joe from participating in many Regattas. Over the last 20 years of on and off as a Coxswain and/or coach I’ve done everything from hold car washes, bottle drives, and even door to door begging for partial sponsorships at local businesses.
Seeing youth teams on the rise in the last few years is great and what the sport needs! This year’s Royal St. John’s Regatta, Joe Dowden notice few of youth teams was cutting it close to the registration deadline. Joe then approached Robert Giannou about Targa taking on one of these teams and he was all for it! These young men are the most enthusiastic fellas on the pond, we would like to wish them all the best on Wednesday, join us pond side at 10:40 as we cheer them on in the 200th running of the Royal St. John’s Regatta!
