Father and son team return for more Targa
The father and son rally team of Doug and Max McDonald return to the roads of Newfoundland after more than a decade for another run at Targa Newfoundland. Coming all the way from the San Francisco Bay Area, they may get the prize for travelling the furthest this year to compete in the rally.
Their last attempt at Targa had its challenges but that didn’t dissuade them, as Doug explains.
“Max and I first drove as a father and son team in Targa Newfoundland in 2015. We had zero experience in rallying, brought the wrong car (an internet special 1986 Porsche 951) that ran more like an old washing machine than a race car and froze for most of the week through broken lexan windows. But, we made it through the week and had an awesome experience meeting some great people and race veterans who encouraged us to continue in the sport.”
What have you two done since Targa 2015?
“Since then we have competed multiple times in the Chihuahua Express rally in Northern Mexico (in our current M3) and eventually gained both a class win and fourth place overall. We have learned a lot since 2015 especially the value of car preparation as Newfoundland (and Mexico) roads can be punishing to both car and drivers.”
What attracted you to Targa?
“It is unlike any experience that we have had. It’s crazy fun, fast, and where else can you see a ‘Moose on Course’ sign at the start of a speed stage. At the end of the race it’s not about a podium finish but about the shared experience with so many great people and the memories we all take home. And of course leaving the island with an intact car and crew wanting for more makes the event even more special.”
We’re thrilled to have the McDonalds back at Targa this year. Hopefully, they’ll have an exciting rally experience without any close encounters with moose.
